Tethered Troubleshooting Guide
From CAE Software
Most initial tethered software problems can be differentiated between network connection issues or software license configuration issues. In rare instances the CAE license service may be down or CAE is having network difficulties. Let's first investigate to see if the problem is with your network configuration or your software license configuration.
[edit] Verify Software
First verify that you have followed the tethered installation instructions. Pay particular attention to the license configuration or license file placement. If a license file was used, the license file should be a plain text file. Opening the license.dat file with a simple text editor, like Notepad, can help validate that there are no extra characters in the file.
If all other options fail, set the Environment Variable LM_LICENSE_FILE to <port@host>...for additional help setting environment variables see [1]
[edit] Check Network Connection to License Server
Next you will want to verify your connection to the license server. First, be sure that your computer is connected to the internet, and then ensure that your computer is authorized to connect to the CAE license services. All computers with a static IP address in the College of Engineering are currently excepted from authorizing. All wireless computers on campus require authorization.
Now, check your computer network connection and firewall to ensure it is properly configured. Most problems are solved by with an updated DNS configuration or configuring your personal firewall to allow communication between your computer and the CAE license servers. You can check your firewall setting by temporarily turning it off. (Be sure to turn your firewall back on, when you are done testing.)
In the worst cases for a flexlm licensed software, download lmutil, exe, a Windows command line utility program. Run it from a Command Prompt (cmd) window. Type: lmutil.exe lmstat -c <port@host> where <port@host> is the port and host extracted from the license.dat file. (For example: port@host for matlab is 1705@fireball.cae.wisc.edu)
