[edit] Tethered Installation Steps - Windows/Mac
Step 1. Before you Install:
- Map a network drive to the CAE media server \\kamino.cae.wisc.edu\tethered. NOTE: You must install WiscVPN to connect to CAE media server from off of the campus network.
- Authorize your computer to use tethered software. Use your CAE username and password to gain access to CAE tethered licensing. Each authorization has a duration of 12 hours.
- Download license.dat, the Matlab tethered license configuration file. You will need this in step 6b below. This simple text file can be downloaded with a right click on the download link. Choose Save Target As... save it to your Desktop or other convenient temporary location. The file name should be license.dat
Step 2. Start the Installer, Setup.exe (not Installer.exe). On the Welcome to Mathwork Installer window, select Install.
Note: R2008a and R2008b users: Please select Install Manually instead of automatically through the Internet. The installation key is located on this site at Step 3 (login required) or in the R2008a folder along with the license.dat file.
Step 3. Enter identification and license information. Enter your name, the company (UW-Madison) and the File Installation Key (or PLP) for the version you are installing.
Step 4. Review and agree to the Software License Agreement.
Step 5. Choose Installation Type. Most users should select Typical. NOTE: Campus Wireless users: the Typical install is approximately 2.3 Gig and will take more than two hours to install. The minimal install, just Matlab 7.5 with no extra toolboxes, is approximately 0.6 Gig and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Step 6. Select, Install the product version from my DVD or local disk only
Step 6b. Browse to your Desktop or to the kamino drive itself (the license file is located in the Matlab folder version you chose to install) and select it. You can also download and select the license file here: license.dat. NOTE: Once the installation is complete, you can remove the license.dat file on your Desktop. This downloaded copy of the license configuration file is only needed during the installation process.
Step 7. Specify Installation Folder and Products.
Step 8. Specify Installation Options (Custom Install only).
Step 9. Confirm Your Choices.
Step 10. Read Product configuration Notes.
Step 11. Complete the Installation.
[edit] Activating MathWorks Account
It is NOT necessary to activate a MathWorks account to run Matlab as tethered software.
Attention Mac Users! If you are being asked to activate your account, additional steps are required to complete the installation process.
Step 12. Navigate to "Matlab" in your Applications menu. From there, right click (control+click) on the "Matlab" icon and select "Show Package Contents".
Step 13. Search for the "Licenses" directory. The Matlab license file (available either on the software webpage, or in the tethered software "Matlab R2009a" directory) needs to be placed in this directory. Please be aware that many web browsers will automatically download this file with the name license.dat.txt. The file needs to be named license.dat, not license.dat.txt .
Step 14. Authorize and run.
[edit] Install the Most Current Version
This is an optional step after installing as above.
To download licensed products you must be associated with a license:
- Log in or create an account on The Mathworks support site.
- Within your MathWorks Account, click "Associate Me with a License" under the "My Licenses" section.
- Enter your license number, which is accessible by typing "ver" from the MATLAB command line.
[edit] Download Updates During the Install
Starting with Release 2006b, you can download products directly from the installer on Microsoft Windows platforms. You must meet the requirements to download and have the following:
- Installer (on your product CD or by download)
- MathWorks Account
- Internet connection
- Personal license password (PLP) see above the the PLP.

[edit] Authorize and Run
Note: In order for tethered software to function properly your workstation must be continuously connected to the network and the CAE license servers.
[edit] Additional Information
After the installation, if you are having problems with licensing error # 96 which implies that there is a communication problem between the server and your computer, Please follow this step:
- Copy the license file that you have saved in the desktop to C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2006a\bin\win32 and you should be overwriting a previous file
[edit] Mac OS X
Mac OS X 10.5: slow scrolling in MATLABĀ® Editor and some other GUIs? Please visit this site to view Mathworks's fix for scrolling in the MATLAB Editor and some other GUIs is slower than it was on OS X 10.4. Note: You'll have to make a Mathworks account to download the fix.
[edit] Tethered Installation Steps - Linux/Unix
These instructions created using Ubuntu 7.10 and verified to work with Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10
Step 1. Before you Install:
- Map a Network Drive to the CAE media server (kamino).
Step 2. This step is not needed for Matlab 2008a and Matlab 2008b. Create the matlab directory as root and move the licence file to $MATLAB/etc/:
root@localhost# mkdir /usr/local/matlab /usr/local/matlab/etc root@localhost# mv ~/Desktop/license.dat /usr/local/matlab/etc/license.dat
Step 3a. Navigate to the DVD mount point or directory where installation information is located and run the installer
root@localhost# ./install
Step 3b. If there is not a DVD mount point (the directory name usually has "DVD" in its name, and in that directory, there will be a file named exactly "install"), you will be installing from downloaded files. You must extract the installer files before you can run ./install:
root@localhost# tar -xf boot.ftp
Now, run the install script:
root@localhost# ./install
Step 4. The installation procedure
For Matlab 2008a and b The screenshots are from a Matlab 2008b installation.
- Choose "Manual Installation".
- Agree to the license agreement.
- Choose the installation directory.
- You will then see a screen asking for a File Installation Key. They are located below, or, for Matlab 2008a, you can copy if from the "File Installation Key 2008a.txt" found in the "Matlab 2008a" directory on the mapped network drive. There is a similar Key for 2008b in the Matlab 2008b directory.
- You will see a screen asking you what products to install. By default, all products will be installed.
- You'll be asked to about where to put symbolic links. This is off by default. Select the box if you want to create the symbolic links.
- You will then be asked for the license file. Click on "Browse" and navigate to where you downloaded license.dat, or use the one in the Matlab 2008b or Matlab 2008a directory on the mapped network drive. In the picture below, the license.dat file is located in /root/Matlab2008b.
- You will then be asked to confirm the start of the installation. Click OK.
- You will see a progress window for a while...
- And, if everything went well, you should be greeted with this message that the installation was successful! Click Exit.
For Matlab versions older than 2008a
- Proceed through the install screens. You will eventually be asked about the license file. You may need to delete some junk from the end of the license file so that it looks like this:
- And you will probably want to create the appropriate links (make sure the box is checked):
Step 5. Run matlab
user@localhost$ matlab
[edit] Java issues
After an install of Matlab 2008a on Ubuntu 8.10 (or any Linux installation with Java >= 1.6.0.10), if you encounter the error
Unable to initialize com.mathworks.mwswing.MJStartup
on running matlab, this could be related to a Java configuration issue. You may confirm that this indeed is the case, by looking for the text
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /path/to/jre/lib/whatever_arch/motif12/libmawt.so
after invoking the command
matlab -nodesktop
You will then need to create a symlink from motif21 to motif12. Assuming that the environment variable MATLAB_HOME points to a valid JRE, this can be done by
sudo ln -s $MATLAB_JAVA/lib/i386/motif21 $MATLAB_JAVA/lib/i386/motif21
(AMD 64 users will need to modify i386 to amd64)
To create a shortcut in your Window Manager, use "matlab -desktop" instead of "matlab" for the command.
If you are using a less common window manager, such as compiz-fusion, awesome, or fluxbox, you may have trouble with Matlab's java. Rather, Matlab's java may have trouble you. Pre-2008a, the fix for all gray screens was the same fix for most java apps:
export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
However, since 2008a, there are addition problems. For workarounds, see here.
