If you are attempting to connect from outside the university network (i.e. commerical Internet provider) you should connect using WiscVPN then continue to step 2. WiscVPN is a free VPN (Virtual Private Network) program distributed by DoIT that will allow you to virtually become part of the Uinversity network by assigning your computer an IP address within the University network.

Note: Should WiscVPN not work for you, you may want to run the more general method of accessing Windows Remote Desktop using Putty via a method called tunneling.

Here's how to remotely access a CAE Windows workstation using a Windows XP computer:

  • Run the Remote Desktop Connection software by clicking on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

Enter remotedesktop.cae.wisc.edu

then click Connect

  • Enter your CAE login information, just as you would at an engineering lab workstation.
  • While logged into the Remote Desktop, move your mouse pointer towards to top of the screen to bring down a menu bar, allowing you to minimize or close the Remote Desktop and continue working with your actual desktop.

Note: In order to connect securely through remote desktop access, you must perform an action referred to as tunneling.

Here's how to remotely access a CAE Windows workstation using a Macintosh OS X computer:

  1. Download the remote desktop client from Microsoft.
  2. Run the remote desktop client.
  3. Connect to remotedesktop.cae.wisc.edu
  4. Enter your CAE login information, just as you would at any CAE lab workstation.

Note: In order to connect securely through remote desktop access, you must perform an action referred to as tunneling.
